Everything You Need to Know About LiveMath Plug-In 3.5
This new release is a major development for LiveMath Plug-In.
Browser technologies and standards have been changing rapidly and we've been doing everything we
can to adapt our software to work with these new standards.
And unfortunately, with all these changes in the software, come changes for the users of the software.
But do not fear - only some users will notice a change - and we're here to help.
Here are some things you might be wondering about. After reading all of this, you should have a
better handle on what is going on and what (if anything at all) you need to do to keep up with
all of these browser changes.
What is this "ActiveX" stuff?
The only thing the average user needs to know about ActiveX Controls is that it's
Microsoft's latest attempt at integrating many rich media types (like audio, video and interactive
math) into Internet Explorer.
It's a lot like what "Plug-Ins" do.
So much like it, in fact, that Microsoft decided they
didn't have to support Plug-Ins anymore in Internet Explorer for Windows. Everything could
be handled using ActiveX controls.
This decision on Microsoft's part came as a sudden shock to software developers like us
(and many others).
It meant that our software was no longer supported in new versions of Internet Explorer,
and in order for our content to be made accessible to Internet Explorer for Windows users,
we would have to create a new product that would be compatible with ActiveX.
And thus was born the LiveMath ActiveX Plug-In.
Designed specifically to work just like the LiveMath Plug-In, but work using this new technology.
The neat thing about this ActiveX Plug-In is that you don't need to download an installer
before you view any LiveMath content on-line. When you visit a page that uses LiveMath
content on it, Internet Explorer will automatically download the software it needs from our
site so that you can interact with that content. And once it installs, it will update itself
automatically when a new version is released.

HomePage for Microsoft ActiveX Controls.
Who does this affect?
If you are using Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or 6 and are running Windows, you need the
LiveMath ActiveX Plug-In instead of the plain old LiveMath Plug-In.
If you use LiveMath content on your website, you are also affected by this change.
You will need to update your webpages that have embedded LiveMath content in them to make
them viewable to Internet Explorer 5.5,6 users.
Much more information is available here.
Do I need this ActiveX Plug-In?
If you are using Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or 6 and are running Windows, you need the
LiveMath ActiveX Plug-In.
If you are using anything else, you do not.
If you are using Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or 6 AND Netscape and are running Windows, you need the
LiveMath ActiveX Plug-In AND the regular version of LiveMath Plug-In.
Check our Browser Compatibilities Page to
see exactly what Plug-In you need.
Will this ActiveX Plug-In work on other browsers?
No.
ActiveX controls only work in Internet Explorer browsers for Windows.
I have LiveMath content on my website. Will people using the ActiveX Plug-In be able to interact
with it?
Yes, BUT, there are some changes you will need to make to your HTML pages so that
Internet Explorer will be able to handle LiveMath content.
(This is Microsoft's fault and is the biggest pain in the @$$ about this ActiveX stuff...)
For more information on this and tutorials on how to fix your HTML content and
scripts that you can use freely to help you with this task, visit our LiveMath
Plug-In HTML Tag Update Center.
And don't forget to write to Microsoft to complain. :O)
