Translated from Calculus&Mathematica published by MathEverywhere, LLC..

Calculus&LiveMath is the LiveMath version of Calculus&Mathematica.

The premier interactive course on single variable calculus, Calculus&Mathematica has been at work in classrooms and on the Internet for the past ten years. Its success is clear. Its innovative approach to the mathematics underlying the calculus has spawned a generation of students and professionals who look at calculus as a collection of tools which have value for them whether they are mathematicians, scientists, engineers, social scientists, or even computer graphics specialists.

The Calculus&LiveMath courseware covers the whole calculus sequence in four books: Growth, Accumulation, Approximation, or Vector Calculus.

We are pleased to annouce the release of Growth in LiveMath format. Growth is a complete and fully interactive course in differential calculus.

Growth

Derivatives: Measuring Growth

The basic question throughout this course is, "What measures growth, and how does that give me a calculational advantage?" The course starts with data based questions about growth, proceeds on to average growth, and then arrives at derivatives via instantaneous growth rates. This is the course with the now famous Race Track Principle, the mean value theorem in an active voice. There's a substantial introductory dose of differential equations to help internalize the idea that derivatives measure growth.

This is a list of thelessons in the Growth book.

Growth Differential Equations
The Exponential and Log Functions The Race Track Principle
Instantaneous Growth More Differential Equations
Rules of the Derivative Parametric Plotting
Using the Tools

Each lesson has four parts: Basics, Tutorials, GiveItaTry, and Literacy Sheet. The Basics and Tutorials are an interactive presentation of the lesson materials. Students are invited to change numbers and formulas and generally experiment and investigate the materials and the questions that come to mind. The GiveItaTry and Literacy Sheets are the evaluation materials. The GiveItaTry notebooks contain homework questions for examination with LiveMath. The Literacy Sheets contain homework problems intended to be considered away from the computer.

Following are examples to give you a feel for what the courseware looks like.

Basics and Tutorials:

  • Fitting data with exponential functions
If you have LiveMath Maker or Viewer you can download the C&LM notebook and interact with it directly or you can view the notebook in PDF form with Acrobat Reader.

    GiveItaTry:

  • Race Track Principle
If you have LiveMath Maker or Viewer you can download the C&LM notebook and interact with it directly or you can view the notebook in PDF form with Acrobat Reader.
  • Calculus&LiveMath CD Editions

Growth, the first book of the Calculus&LiveMath series is available on CD.

    Student Edition
The student edition contains the entire collection of courseware materials in LiveMath and PDF format. Although you will need LiveMath Maker to fully interact with Calculus&LiveMath, you can examine the material with limited interaction with the LiveMath Viewer. Installers for Viewer and Acrobat Reader are available on the CD for viewing the courseware in LiveMath or PDF format.

The CD also contains Jump Start. Jump Start is a free introductory course for LiveMath. The Jump Start lessons will introduce you to the functionality and interface of LiveMath to prepare you to take full advantage of the courseware.

    Teacher Edition
The teacher edition contains the entire collection of courseware materials in LiveMath and PDF format. Although you will need LiveMath Maker to fully interact with Calculus&LiveMath, you can examine the material with limited interaction with the LiveMath Viewer. Installers for Viewer and Acrobat Reader are available on the CD for viewing the courseward in LiveMath or PDF format.

The course materials included in the teacher edition are enhanced with information, ideas, and suggestions to keep students focused and active. The Keeping Focus and Explorations buttons act as a guide signaling important concepts and skills as well as opportunities for teachers to author their own additions. Unlike a hardback book, this textbook is electronic and editable. Teachers are encouraged to personalize their courseware with additions as they see needed by their students. Teachers new to interactive textbooks will find the intial steps into this type of courseware smooth and enjoyable.

The teacher edition also contains a full solutions manual in interactive format. This is not an answer book, but a solutions manual. Each homework question has a fully descriptive solution complete with explanations and interactive mathematics....just as expected from students. This will help teachers present coherent expectations for students.

The CD also contains Jump Start. Jump Start is a free introductory course for LiveMath. The Jump Start lessons will introduce you to the functionality and interface of LiveMath to prepare you to take full advantage of the courseware.
